Sport in Manchester and especially football is an important part of the city’s culture with two successful Premiership teams within 3 miles of the city centre, Manchester United and Manchester City.
Many first class sporting facilities were built in Manchester for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, including the Velodrome, the City of Manchester Stadium, the National Squash Centre and the Manchester Aquatics Centre.
Old Trafford Cricket ground became the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club in 1864 and is still one of the most popular sports in Manchester as well as Rugby, Boxing, Ice Hockey, Cycling, Athletics and Basketball.
